Good divorce lawyers not only warn potential clients about plummeting income, but about the larger picture of likely financial sacrifices which are part of divorce.

The emotional toll of a divorce is worse than the financial. We usually recommend that our clients be in counseling during a divorce.

For cases with a lot at stake or complex issues, a potential client should be less interested in cost and more interested in the skill and experience of the lawyer.

Good, professional lawyers do not over promise. Rather, we give a realistic appraisal.

In a case where there are complex financial circumstances involved, parties should hire lawyers with sufficient experience and knowledge to understand them, but also to understand when a higher degree of expertise is warranted.

Smart Money’s article on divorce attorneys does make a good point, although it is not real clear on what it means to “get sued.”

Good divorce lawyers will never guarantee a fee. At best, we can give an estimate, and hope the client remembers that it was just that – an estimate.

Hopefully, the Wisconsin Court of Appeals decision in Nehls will be relied upon only for the waiver issue, not approving the use of a GAL serving as a type of “special master” in deciding custody matters.
